Before World Wide Motion Pictures Corporation acquired it for distribution, Red Roses and Petrol was a film festival favorite! The independent, Irish-American movie won first prize at the Avignon Film Festival; received runner-up kudos at the Westwood Film Festival; and was recognized at the AFIFest (the movie’s world premiere), the Deuville Film Festival, the Boston Irish Film Festival, the Newport Beach Film Festival, the Palm Springs International Film Festival, and on the Toronto International Film Festival circuit. Red Roses and Petrol’s Greg Ellis (Tom) has a lengthy and varied resume. Before he became known for Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean series of films, he was a familiar voice to fans of the Star Trek-themed video games and appeared in a June 1999 episode of STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE. Now, the actor has returned to the final frontier with his role as Chief Engineer Olsen in Paramount Pictures’ Star Trek. Currently filming, the movie is directed by J.J. Abrams and takes the fabled story back in time to when Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto) were young, and the starship U.S.S. Enterprise was being built for its maiden voyage! However, Trekkies everywhere will have to sit tight; Star Trek isn’t scheduled to release until May 2009. For a sneak peak at the exciting trailer, visit http://www.startrekmovie.com.
In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, Red Roses and Petrol launched a promotional campaign at pubs in Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago and New York. When telling people about it, we heard of other ways that people planned to celebrate the Irish holiday. From toasting with a glass of Guinness while wearing the color green to attending local parades and enjoying feasts of corned beef, cabbage and potatoes with the family, everyone seemed to have their own traditions. How does your family mark the festive occasion? Share your stories on our forum.
Red Roses and Petrol is just one of many great films that Malcolm McDowell (Enda) has contributed to during his four decades in show business. One of his better-known pictures was the cult-favorite musical, O Lucky Man! (1973). Based in part on the actor’s own experiences as a young coffee salesman, it features McDowell starring opposite future Oscar-winner Helen Mirren (The Queen). 2006 brought the release of O Lucky Malcolm!, a documentary tribute to McDowell’s celebrated career. In it, the actor’s reflections about his experiences are bolstered by tributes from friends and family including Red Roses and Petrol’s own Max Beesley (Johnny) and director Tamar Simon Hoffs. The documentary was packaged with the October 2007 two-disc, special edition DVD releases of O Lucky Man! and McDowell’s 1971 classic, A Clockwork Orange. Both films are available from Amazon.com.
St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner, and the friends of Red Roses and Petrol are ready to celebrate! Irish pubs in each of the U.S. cities where the picture will be launched — Los Angeles, New York, Boston and Chicago — will be promoting it in a variety of ways. While the fantastic film won’t need the luck of the Irish for its success, the promotional campaign will need your support. Please visit www.redrosesandpetrol.com for a list of participating pubs, and then raise a glass in the movie’s honor. Cheers!
It’s said that nearly every family has its golden child. But more often than not, there is also the black sheep or the dark horse. In Red Roses and Petrol, Max Beesley’s character, Johnny Doyle, is a unique mixture of all three. Although beloved by his sisters, the playful bad boy who refused to grow up was also the subject of his parents’ grave concern. Is there someone in your family who usurps all the attention?
